OK, OK, OK. Sorry peeps, I have been busy doing my life again. You all are going to get tired of hearing me say this, but, truth is truth: Chaka Khan is a pure-musical genius. I arrived to a crowded Faithful Central Church just as Khan was being introduced. I had the pleasure of sitting next to a couple of people in the audience who were not real Chaka Khan fans. One person literally snarled when Khan was being introduced, saying, "Yeah Right. Now, I know she ain't gonna be screaming 'I Feel For You’ up in the lawd's house." I glanced at her and her furs for a sec, giggled, then went back to Khan. Chaka finally bounced out looking radiant and in good spirits. They had a full orchestra. Being a Khannossuer now for about 30 years, I can always tell from note one if the cold-blooded (in the cool way Black folks use the term) genius version of Chaka is going to show up. And she did. Dr. Chaka Khan was in the hiz-zouse, and she performed hallelujah surgery that morning. She was musically amazing, exquisite, ingenious and superb. I don't know the name of the songs she sung, I don't follow gospel. Anyway, she was in clear, soulful, slap-somebody voice, and obviously inspired. LOL. While Dr. Khan threw-down, in the creative and completely unique way she does, I spent more time watching the people that were talking "stuff" at-first than watching Khan. LOL! It was as if I was the proud sibling of my ingenius sister, as all watched Chaka make people’s jaws drop. One of them said, "Wow. How old is she now!?" (Because she looked and sounded so great). Everyone would soon find out because they mentioned that it was Chaka Khan's birthday. But, Chaka was our present.
People where screaming, and going through the motions church folks usually do, every time Dr. Khan went for one of her warm charismatic low tones, and then when her voice was just melodiously beautiful, all the way up to the “only Chaka can do this sh@t” high notes. People were floored, and up on their feets (spelt that way on purpose). Apparently Tramaine Hawkins sung too. I did not see her performance. But I heard people say, “I did not expect Chaka Khan to out sing Tremaine in Gospel music! (It’s deep to me how people always want to make things a competition).
People, those who weren’t already up, stood up, after Dr. Khan finished. Yes, including the people that had originally rolled their eyes when the doctor was first introduced. By this point, they were saying stuff like, "Lawd Ham Mussy, she needs to do a gospel record. The girl's annointed." LOL! Yep, the doctor was amazing! Soulful, inspired, and frankly, she sung her whole @ss off. OOps, this is gospel music: What I meant was, Dr. Chaka Khan sung splendidly.
P.S. Later I got frustrated because this is the kind of performance somebody needs to be releasing accidentally on video "unauthorized." (of course with Khan's blessing) |
