Lawd Hammercy….Yup, literally. Chaka delivered beyond any thoughts of doubt! This version of “It’s Not Over” was WAY better than her UNCF performance of it, in which I thought was great!, so to top greatness is just plan on WICKED. The band was SO on point with the music and Chaka just flowed through the song with ease. I love how she’s looking so relaxed and focused on the music these days. Peace and serenity was all in her face. Lecrae even joined her on stage which was a big delight! I mean, the performance should have been GREAT considering that’s it’s been out for so long, and still no video (LOL, just had to throw that in there somewhere. But seriously, where the HECK is the video? That thing needs to come NOW! RIGHT NOW!…OK, I’m back calm. Anyway, GREAT GREAT GREAT job CK!

Enjoyed Chaka so much on Sundays Best last night she looked amazing and her singing was great! I’m with Tim hoping she releases the new music really soon! I can’t wait for the new CD its driving me mad waiting so long!! Ok guess I’ll have to wait a little longer but last night made me want more of her incredible music please, please, please Chaka stop teasing us!!! I would buy her stuff today right now without even listening first just because of “It’s Not Over” I’m so ready.September 2, 2013 at 4:46 PM #18975
Sorry that I have to disagree but,Chaka sound ok last night on Sunday Best! UNCF version vocally was much better!!!! She looked good but I really wish that she get those 4 teeth in the front bottom row, cleaned or cover them with veneers. I’m so tired of people asking me what’s wrong with her teeth! I’m use to Chaka having the most beautiful smile in the industry and now it’s actually distracting to look at Chaka perform because those four teeth in the bottom front are like brown and the rest are so beautiful. Chaka please find your smile again!
Chaka taught me how to take pride in my smile! And I wanna see Chaka get her smile back on par!!!
I would also like Chaka to be more free and comfortable vocally, she always sound like she’s thinking appose to singing masterfully like she does sometimes! Chaka be comfortable in your sexy and sing with the sexy coo’s that I know you can.
You have a voice that’s so beyond what most could ever dream of and sometimes you sound so unsure of your gift! I have seen you a good couple hundred times from hear to Jakarta Indonesia and I can tell when your comfortable and when your not! I know singers who don’t have half the gift that god has given you but they are so comfortable onstage that they do well vocally and presence wise!
I have heard you do things with your voice that no one else on this earth can do, and I mean no one else!!! There are girls who mimic you and of copy your style but as close as they come is as far off they are, lol. It was always about the little subliminal sexy things you did vocally, and not always about your scream, though oh what a wonderful scream it is.
I have said to MILINI as well she posses that same sex appeal in her voice without even trying! For example the recording of “Whatcha Gonna Do For Me” the was two different versions that played on the radio and the only differences was the add libs! They we subtle and yet so sexy and then the led up to your brilliant wails. I would love to hears you sing the songs with the Add Libs closer to the recordings vocally and musically in the pocket.
I don’t think you know after 40 years in the business just how brilliant you are! One of these days I’m gonna sit with you and Tammy and point out the things that made us vocalist and musicians love you and your mastery the way we do!

Wallace…I definitely understand the teeth part, but I have to just wholeheartedly disagree with you about the vocals my brother. I felt that she had the groove of the song and phrasing down pack compared to UNCF. UNCF had a lot of mumbling and mixing up of the verses and chorus…Her Sunday Best performance to me had the right phrasing and the vibe was so much more on point. But we’re entitled to our own opinions, and we don’t have to do anything but to agree to disagree! I respect your stance on the performance…September 2, 2013 at 11:53 PM #18978
I thought it was a good performance. The production was not as grand as the UNCF performance, but that’s OK. Remember y’all its BET (i.e., low budget, limited resources, probably limited rehearsal time maybe?) Also, maybe Chaka was a bit nervous in that setting, with these gospel legends standing up in front of her.
I think she does need to polish up her ad libs and transitions a bit on It’s Not Over. Most of her usual songs are arranged so that she can sing the melody or drop from it and ad lib at will. And she’s knows her marks. But with It’s Not Over, it seems like she is still tweaking her ad libs and her transitions in and out of the melody.
A song like It’s Not Over is actually a very precise song with a relatively fast tempo. It leaves little room for ad libbing because the song is highly overdubbed and layered. Plus, the song moves fast and needs to be precisely done. Its not the kinda song where she can float in and out from the chorus to ad libbing randomly. She has to be precise. If she sings the chorus “It’s Not Over, over”, she has to commit to it for the whole chorus. Or else, it sounds noticeable incomplete.
If I were her musical director or arranger for that song, I would probably ask or “beg” (whichever applies to Chaka) to stick to the recorded version as much as possible. I would have Chaka only sing the verse 1 and 2 parts, but not sing chorus sections (the “Can’t stop now” harmony section and the actual chorus (the repetitive “It’s Not Over” sections) at all- leave those parts completely to her background singers. And she just do the sparse ad libs up to the bridge (plus and she can dance and do some choreographed moves during this time). Then, after “No Not Today” then she can have at it with her ad libs and wailing. And then, she can do whatever her heart desires during the “over over over over” part.
Her tone, range and clarity were just as good on this performance, if not better than UNCF from what I heard. I just thought song arrangement for the UNCF show was much better, because they had more personnel and more instruments to beef up the production. And Chaka’s ad libs were a bit tentative this time around, which I think, is part of what Wallace is pointing out.
And she looked amazing to me!September 3, 2013 at 4:46 AM #18979
Did you hear her harmonize on the bridge? She weaved in and out of the melody…LOL, I was like “Go head Chaka…” She was gettin’ it…You just gotta keep replaying it over and over and over…LOL.
As far as production, Del…UNCF An Evening of Stars is a telethon that Chaka is a alumnus of, plus a past Honore. So, they were able to make the spotlight about her and give her the screen, dancers, balloons, etc. They were celebrating her 40 Years in music, so it was about her. I do think the music on Sunday Best was better than UNCF. It appeared more energized and had a bit of more rock to it for some reason. However, Sunday Best is not about Chaka, yet alone a secular artist platform, so just to have her on there was good, because they couldn’t have all of those props surrounding her, because she was just a guest performer for Sunday Best season finale. But yes, The UNCF Production was big with the lights, dancers, balloons, and all that good stuff, LOL.

I enjoyed the performance and thought her vocals were good. Felt like she was at ease with the song even though she doesn’t perform it in her live show. Don’t know what that’s all about but it is what it is! What I got from this was she probably was a bit uncomfortable in front of a gospel audience in that outfit. Just by looking at her you could see it. I think she caught herself a few times from doing certain movements so as to be appropriate. Bottom line wrong attire for that setting and I’m willing to bet she was feeling some of that too.

Oh my there is a lot of judgment about Chaka on Sundays Best show? Know one is perfect however I did see and hear some things but it didn’t distract me from enjoying her performance maybe that’s because I love her musically? Anyway I thought she was really good and knowing that most Christians love to criticize she refrained from giving them any hip action LOL! We all are great fans of hers hell I’ve been following her for over 43 years so I’m just glad she is still giving her all!! I hope she never does what Cher or Little Kim have done to their faces and bodies just stay real, dang she looked great to me. Everybody was dressed casually anyway on the show so I didn’t think anything was wrong with that and the teeth, yes I’ve noticed it but hey I need work too ($)! Maybe she has other health issues causing that condition? I don’t know but what I do know is I’m glad she is still ALIVE and SINGING! Flaws we all have them and she isn’t any different so lets give our girl a break she is 60!! Come on Chaka give us that music girl that’s how we know her anyway!September 3, 2013 at 1:18 PM #18985
Her voice was in great shape and the performance was great, but she did seem a bit hesitant to go full throttle. I agree with Wallace about Chaka being unsure at times about the magnitude of her gift. Chaka’s voice possesses a power and energy that is not human (prime ex. TTF).September 3, 2013 at 2:20 PM #18986
Where can I watch you guys? I missed it, any suggestions?September 3, 2013 at 3:03 PM #18987

I enjoyed her Sunday Best performance way more than I did the UNCF performance. However, I still think it’s time for her to release another single that’s geared more towards her base audience. I know several people who watched her on Sunday’s Best and the people who usually comment to me had nothing to say about her performance. And these same people gave me mostly indifferent feedback when she performed the song on UNCF. If you’re not on the dance floor, “It’s Not Over” is really not a song people generally are going to connect with and it’s not a sound the public associates with her. I know I still remain very apathetic towards the song myself. I actually like the lyrics. It’s the techo factor that’s taking the emphasis away for me.September 3, 2013 at 5:58 PM #18991
The consensus amongst my hood & friends was that Chaka looked and sounded great, though I thought the performance was too short considering who she is in the industry even if she is not considered a gospel artist. I personally thoroughly enjoyed the performance esp b/c Lacrea was with her. I just wish she would’ve taken advantage of the song when 1st release like performing at in concert & maybe a few late night tv shows. Though it’s not too late a song can have a 2nd life & perhaps she will take advantage of it when the cd drops.September 4, 2013 at 12:11 AM #18994
I agree that It’s Not Over can be re-pushed in a major way. Mainly because it has not been pushed yet. No offense to UNCF, but I would not classify that telethon as major exposure. The masses still have not been exposed to the song.
She can start a promo tour in October or November and carry the song into the holiday season. I think It’s Not Over would be quite fitting for a New Years Eve party or concert. Festive, up beat. WITH A NICE COOL VIDEO TO GO WITH IT
I know we all have our preferences to what we all think Chaka should do. If we all sat in a room and tried to discuss how to promote Chaka – what style of songs, outfits, hairstyle, dancing, arrangements, choice of gigs, choice of markets – we would not agree amongst ourselves probably. So I am choosing to interpret this tread of comments as simply a variety of constructive feedback thoughts for Chaka, not “judgments” Its all good right? We are all just chiming in outta love for our girl.
I am personally OK with the whole sound of It’s Not Over. It is techno-sounding, but go check out Billboard’s Top 20 charts right now, and tell me what upbeat song doesn’t have a techno-y production behind it at this moment. Its just what is selling now. I love the techno sounds for Chaka as a comeback song at this point in her career. We can have Chaka doing the more “mature” AC, or jazzy stuff, but I guarantee you it won’t make the charts. A song like It’s Not Over is a “one off” song that can commercialize Chaka (a la “I Feel For You” in 1984). Then from there, she can go authentic R&B or whatever else.
I’m not giving up hope just yet on It’s Not Over
