TOO many great things can be said about this new project. In two words FANTABULOUS JOB! I have heard 3 songs so far and can't wait to drive my neighbors crazy blasting the entire CD. She brought me home and introduced me to her family, but my mom blocked the friendship which was blossoming.... I have always loved her music, and whether or not she had a hit song on the radio, I never lost any love for this artist, nor did I ever have any doubt that she would continue to wow her listeners! I first met Yvette (Chaka) back in 1972 at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, PA....Rufus had just released the second Warner Bros. album with "Tell Me Something Good" and I was on tour with a band from New Jersey, "Brother To Brother" (under the auspices of All Platinum Records out of Englewood, NJ). We played The Spectrum Arena in Philly. We arrived first at The Spectrum and checked in followed by my homeboy's (Randy Muller) band Brass Construction. We were to open the show. After Randy and crew checked in, RUFUS' bus pulled in with Chaka in full "Chaka" regalia and I FLIPPED! She was as gorgeous as the album cover and Chaka was very gracious to all of us on the tour. Our contract rider specified that the promoter had to feed us all (ALL THE ACTS ON THE BILL) at a sit-down, catered dinner before showtime. When RUFUS' bus pulled in, Chaka immediately headed to her private dressing room, but when she emrged for dinner, she was completely done-up to the max with wardrobe, hair and make-up for dinner. She gave all of us her signature lipstick-imprinted KISS on our wine glasses. I later went on to work with ATLANTIC RECORDS and Arif Mardin, the legendary producer who co-wrote, tracked and arranged some of Yvette's biggest hits and saw her again during those times. Chaka is an amazing vocalist whose recordings will stand the test of time --- these new, young chicks CAN'T EVER TOUCH HER!! When Chaka lets loose that unmistakable wail of hers, IT'S A WRAP. JACK!!!

AND WHO TAKES THE STAGE: A FUNK BAND WITH A LEAD SINGER WEARING A HUGE AFRO AND AN EVEN BIGGER VOICE, PERFORMING AT A CATHOLIC SCHOOL’S SENIOR PROM, AT A COUNTRY CLUB IN THE MIDDLE OF NO WHERE!! YEARS LATER, AFTER “RUFUS” MADE IT BIG AND CHAKA KHAN EVEN BIGGER, NO ONE WOULD BELIEVE MY STORY. MAYBE SOMEDAY, IF OR WHEN MY DAUGHTER MAKES IT, SOMEONE WILL REMEMBER HER PLAYING AT THEIR PARTY AND TELL THEIR OWN “CHAKA KHAN” STORY.

As I sit here with the headphones on, here it is, ma'am. Thought I would share the review of FUNK THIS with you and your guests.

With glee, I review this album, “FUNK THIS”, by my favorite funky songstress, the inimitable Chaka Khan. "FUNK THIS" was released in September 2007. This album is her first R&B/ Funk album release in almost ten years. I ordered it without hearing it. I’ve been jamming, rocking, bopping, funking, singing these songs ever since it landed in my mailbox.

Ms. Khan was the lead singer of the funk group, Rufus back in the ‘70’s. My mom or uncle had a copy of “RAGS TO RUFUS”. The hit song “TELL ME SOMETHIN’ GOOD” was my song! I remember shaking my little, narrow, ten-year-old tail, holding a hairbrush for a microphone, belting that song with all my heart. No body can belt like Chaka Khan. She also has extraordinary phrasing on jazz tunes and her velvety voice, when singing ballads and jazz, whoo-hoo, that woman can SING!!! There is none like her.

In the summer of 2006, I was at an outdoor music festival and Chaka tore it up! She had me in tears with “THROUGH THE FIRE” and her beautiful testimony about being freed from drug addiction. I was leaning on the fence of the V.I.P. section and they were handing me napkins, I was crying so hard. I wasn’t far from the stage and Chaka Khan’s surface beauty and inner beauty were just overwhelming. In describing vocalists, the word “diva” is overused and undervalued. Chaka Khan deserves the word Diva, with a capital D.

Chaka Khan can sing like none other. I can’t describe her full-out expressive vocal blast. It makes your neck hairs stand up. When she does a ballad, she can tell a tale. On jazzy tunes, this sister can scat with the best of them, and project some unique phrasing.

1. Back In The Day – The funky guitar, finger popping, along with Chaka’s vocals recounting her childhood. Very danceable.
2. Foolish Fool – This song is an old Ed Townsend, originally recorded by Dee Dee Warwick, is funky, too! Chaka just lets this woman that is crazy enough to want to take her man, just lets her have it!
3. One For All Time – This track is nice, and reminiscent of “MAGIC IN YOUR EYES” from the Ask Rufus album. It a nice cha-cha type danceable song.
4. Angel - This is the current single off her album. I like it; it is about a woman making all kinds of mistakes in life and flying blind in her love life the ensuing mess of, and the resurrection of her life.
5. Will You Love Me? – Another funky jam, to have the divas bopping down the freeway, singing along. Very catchy refrain.
6. Castles Made Of Sand - This is a remake of a Jimi Hendrix-penned song. The dreamy guitar licks, ummm, scrumptious! Chaka can tell a story. Yes, she can!
7. Disrespectful featuring Mary J Blige – This is a great pairing of Chaka and Mary J. This is a hard-hitting song, some real irate sisters, finally losing their cool about a disrespectful man in their lives. Not many can hold up to a duet with Chaka at a full-out vocal blast party. Mary hangs, to her credit. Whitney Houston, in her hey-day could hang with Chaka.
8. Sign 'O' The Times – This is a Prince-penned remake, about the bleak subjects of AIDS, gang violence, and drug abuse. Chaka does it justice. I love her blended harmonies, either with herself, or background singers. Then, the song serves up a hopeful set of lyrics, beautifully faded out with “Whoa, whoa, whoa”, a nod to “I’M EVERY WOMAN”.
9. Pack'd My Bags/You Got The Love featuring Tony Maiden – Chaka and Tony Maiden, the funky rhythm guitar man and songwriter. I almost blew out my vocals singing along with this one. “PACK’D MY BAGS” it is such a sweet, poignant, funky song about her “baby-daddy”, who left her and the Milini to pursue fame. “YOU GOT THE LOVE” Ms. Khan and Mr. Maiden are just funky. This little slice of remake is just too much, very funky. Mercy.
10. Ladies' Man - This is a remake of a Joni Mitchell tune, of a charming ladies man with a few bad habits. Nice. Very nice and the background vocal arrangements are walking and talking!
11. You Belong To Me featuring Michael McDonald – Another remake, a nice pairing with Michael McDonald.
12. Hail To The Wrong – A frank discussion about yet another no-good man, I LOVE IT!
13. Super Life – Chaka’s dedication to living the best life she can for the rest of her days, for the babies. This song is a social commentary on the violence plaguing the black community. This track is funky, too.

My favorites on this album are “BACK IN THE DAY”, “FOOLISH FOOL”, “WILL YOU LOVE ME?” “ANGEL” “CASTLES MADE OF SAND”, “PACK’D MY BAGS/YOU GOT THE LOVE” and of course “SUPERLIFE” which is an inspiration to those that are in the process of resurrecting their lives from the ashes.

The musicianship is top-flight. Real guitars, funky bass and real drums. The background vocal harmonies are wonderful. I love this album!!! In the age on “one-track-is-worth-it-only” c.d.’s, FUNK THIS is an oasis for those starved for some good, funky soulful songs, with lyrics that mean something.

Thank you Chaka for the many years of listening to your Unique and beautiful voice. Wish I could hear you sing Smoking Room once again. Thanks for putting this new album out. It is all that!

The song "Angel" about made me cry in the car. This song is about all women--over every race, financial background, education, religion and sexual preference. We all feel the same way. Where oh where are the remixes ???? The funky Matty mixes of Disrespectful are good but the house mix is lacking. Quentin Harris has a mix on his myspace player that is SLAMMIN and which will sound even better pitched down a bit. The Mig remix of Angel is good, but again, this sounds better pitched down a bit. Are there any other mixes of this ? When can I get my hands on these ? - love ya, mean it !!!!! - brian

I had the pleasure of going to the concert in Merrillville, IN at the Star Plaza on Nov.10. It seemed as though Chaka did a lot of screaming instead of singing. Maybe the microphone needed to be adjusted. Maybe you guys may want to think of that during the next concert. Other than that the songs were great.

Chaka, I first fell in love with you when I saw you on Soul Train in which I think it was 1971. My brothers were teasing me because I was just in awe of you. I think you were wearing a tube top and some sexy jeans while you were dancing and singing with Rufus. You are sexy, beautiful, smart and a role model for all to see with the talents you posses. At 44 years old I just witnessed (and participated in thanks to Chaka Khan) one of the greatest lives shows I've ever seen. Not only is she talented, entertaining, respectful, and sexy. Chaka Khan's vocals are truly one of, if not the best in the history of the world.
This view is not only shared within the music industry, but with just the average person with ears to hear. I recently downloaded a "you tube" performance from the Montreal Jazz Festival where she performed "I Wish You Love" with George Duke and Stanley Clarke. It is just Amazing. The performance was not intented to be broadcast to the masses but no one knew that something such as "you tube" would allow us to experience such a rare and outstanding performance. I reccomend it to anyone who enjoys good music. She really lets loose on the performance and her voice and style and charisma always reaches my soul. It is a gift. Her voice is one of a Kind. I could go on and on. She continues to impress and have an impact on me since I first heard her style from the Rufus and Chaka Masterjam album. She is the greatest!!

I would like to say that no one ever mentions a great Rufus album named "Camoflage", with songs like "Quandry" and "Lila". Also, the great album with "Best In The West", produced by Arif Mardin. I livein Bermuda now but when I see you perform again , please consider singing the great songs from these albums. I've been a big fan for years

Sometime in the 70's my best friend and I went to one of the very first live concerts I'd ever seen in Memorial Auditorium in Chattanooga, TN. I can't even remember who was headlining bcuz after this absolutely fantastic band with this cute, little bitty lead singer with big heels , big hair and an even bigger voice came on stage nothing else mattered! You fell off your shoes, they were so high and then you kicked them off and kept on singing! I just want to thank you so much for all the great memories! I love love love you!!

Dear Chaka ,

Last Wednesday, on January 30, My wife, daughter, and 83 year old mother-in-law enjoyed seeing you perform in The Color Purple. Of course, everyone did an outstanding job. We have been fans of yours since the days of RUFUS.

We waited in gated area as instructed about 45 minutes after the play to meet as many of the cast members as possible and we especially wanted to see you. As you recall, it was bitterly cold,and when you were existing the theater, it became apparent to us you were going to leave without signing autographs or take great anyone due to the weather.
To my surpirse, when you looked over at us standing in the gated area and I gestured to you for a picture, without hessitation you came over to us and allowed my daughter to take a picture of you and me with her cell phone camera. The camera flashed but the picture was not saved. Needless to say we are disappointed the picture was not saved. We hope we will get to meet you again one day in the future.
Next time we will bring a real camera.
One thing is for sure, we will never forget the experience of meeting you and how kind you were to us on this very cold night.

National Transportation Safety Board recently divulged they had funded a project with the US auto makers for the past five years. The NTSB covertly funded a project whereby the auto makers were installing black boxes in four wheel drive pickup trucks in an effort to determine, in fatal accidents, the circumstances in the last 15 seconds before the crash.

They were surprised to find in 49 of the 50 states the last words of drivers in 61.2% of fatal crashes were, "Oh, Shit!"

We still talk about that night all the time meeting with you we love your music so much and to have met you in person was a special moment in our lives that we will never forget.
